City RideThe Japanese Flag.

City traffic at dusk with skyscrapers in the background.

City Ride tries to capture the feeling of being in a new and exciting city, taking in the unfamiliar sights, sounds, smells, and culture, as you ride along in a bus, street car, or taxi. It brings to mind being in San Francisco, during an extended holiday I had in America in the summer of 2009.

With a slightly jazz-funk feel the music features a simple melody played on the electric piano, leading to an acoustic piano jazz solo in the middle, before the eventual return of the electric piano again.

Like many of my compositions, City Ride started out as a piece improvised at the piano. The essence of the improvisation was recorded and developed to become the first piece to be added to Smooth Jazz…and more in 2012.
