Village of the Secret Kilns
Village of the Secret Kilns takes its title directly from the name of a website selling high-end Japanese porcelain from Okawachiyama, a small village in the south of Japan. I went on a tour of the village, meeting some of the artisans, and was deeply moved by the vivid colours and artistry of the porcelain produced there.
A rhythm that fits the words Village of the Secret Kilns is used in the opening theme of the title track, and the motif occurs in various guises throughout the work. The Artisan, with its busy feel, depicting artists at work, is followed by Echoes of a Dream, a more tranquil piece of rest and reflection. The work ends with Village of the Secret Kilns (reprise), completing a day’s cycle in the life of a small village devoted to producing exquisite works of art.
