When You Call
I was working in my music room one day when the phone rang. To my surprise the party on the other end of the line was a lady I had met some years earlier. We had kept in touch once a year with Christmas cards but nothing more. Now she said she was going to be in town and wanted to meet. After I put the phone down I turned to my piano and played the music I later named When You Call.
I remember my music teacher at school saying that composition is ‘One percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration’, (an adaptation of Thomas Edison’s definition of genius). As a composer I know this to be true, but in the case of When You Call it was one of the very rare occasions when the composition was ninety-nine percent inspiration with only one percent perspiration!
